Modernize U.S. Sunscreen Regulations for Improved Skin Cancer Prevention

11 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

The current state of sunscreen regulation in the United States is outdated and restrictive, limiting the availability of advanced sun protection products. The FDA, treating sunscreens as over-the-counter drugs, permits only 17 filters, many of which have undesirable side effects or are challenging to incorporate into products. This contrasts with regions like Europe, Australia, and Asia, where sunscreens are regulated as cosmetics or health products, allowing a broader range of active ingredients. The slow pace of FDA approval for new ingredients is concerning, particularly given the urgency of skin cancer prevention. It's time to modernize our regulations, aligning them with global standards to ensure access to improved sun protection technologies. This change is not just about consumer choice, but a public health imperative.
