Written by Sarah Mehta at ACLU: “Kilmar Abrego García should be free right now. Instead, the Trump administration arrested him at his ICE check-in appointment with plans to deport him to Uganda – a country to which he has no connection. Despite living in Maryland for years, Kilmar Abrego García was deported to a prison in El Salvador notorious for torture without trial – on what officials themselves called an ‘administrative error.’ There, he faced isolation, beatings, and psychological torture. Rather than rectifying their horrible mistake, the government then alleged he was involved in federal ‘smuggling’ crimes. After months – and repeated court orders, including from the Supreme Court – the Trump administration finally brought him back from El Salvador. But just days following his reunion with his family, he was detained again by ICE. He refused a government deal to accept deportation to Costa Rica in exchange for pleading guilty to criminal charges. Now that he's refused, they're retaliating by threatening to send him to a country without assurances of his safety or freedom: Uganda. Yesterday afternoon, a federal court ruled that ICE is ‘absolutely forbidden’ from deporting him without an opportunity to challenge his deportation and present claims in court. This order is a relief, but we expect the Trump administration to double down on its plans to remove him, separating him from his wife and young children. His story is a shocking example of the obsessive abuse and cruelty the Trump administration is inflicting on our loved ones and neighbors across the country. The Trump administration is playing games with people's lives. They're ignoring the Constitution, our rights, and basic human dignity to try to win political points. It's clear that this isn't just about Kilmar: it's about the Trump administration weaponizing our system against anyone they don't like, especially people who are immigrants. It's about punishing people for standing up for their rights. It's about making our neighbors live in constant fear of deportation – afraid to go to work, afraid to go to school, and afraid to go to their court appointments.” I urge you to fight against the inhumane, anti-immigrant policies of this administration with everything you have. Free Kilmar Abrego García.
