Defend the 14th Amendment: Protect Citizenship, Equality, and Due Proce
We, the undersigned, urge you to defend one of the most vital pillars of American democracy: the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. For over 150 years, the 14th Amendment has safeguarded the principles of citizenship, equality, due process, and civil rights. It was born out of the struggle to repair our nation’s deepest wounds and to promise that every person — regardless of race, origin, or background — would be protected under the law. Today, that promise is under unprecedented attack. Efforts to end birthright citizenship, weaken equal protection, erode due process, and nullify accountability for insurrection are not simply political disputes. They are direct assaults on the foundation of justice and liberty for all Americans. We respectfully call on Congress to: • Reject any legislation or executive actions seeking to redefine or restrict birthright citizenship guaranteed under Section 1. • Defend the Equal Protection Clause against attempts to dismantle civil rights protections under the false pretense of “colorblind” laws that ignore historic and ongoing inequality. • Preserve the Due Process Clause by ensuring that all individuals, citizens and non-citizens alike, retain their right to fair treatment under the law. • Protect the Insurrection Clause (Section 3) by exploring legislation that clearly defines and enforces consequences for those who engage in attacks on our democratic institutions. Weakening the 14th Amendment would not only betray the sacrifices of those who fought to enshrine it — it would destabilize the legal protections that uphold dignity, freedom, and equality in America. We do not seek division. We seek unity grounded in the enduring values of our Constitution. We ask you, as our elected representatives, to honor your oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” by standing firm against any attempt to diminish the 14th Amendment’s guarantees. Democracy demands vigilance. Justice demands courage. The future of our nation demands your protection of these rights. Thank you for your service and your commitment to the Constitution.
