Reject SAVE Act voter suppression, support fair elections
The SAVE Act is a blatant attempt at voter suppression that could disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters, particularly women, young people, low-income individuals, and naturalized citizens. Requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote erects unnecessary barriers and goes against the fundamental principles of our democracy. This discriminatory legislation has stalled in the Senate, but anti-voting activist groups like Tea Party Patriots are now launching a concerted campaign to pressure lawmakers into attaching the SAVE Act to must-pass bills like the budget or defense spending. Their plan is to hold rallies, go door-to-door, and strong-arm Republican members of Congress into supporting this undemocratic measure in August under the guise of "Only Citizens Vote Month." We cannot allow voter suppression efforts like the SAVE Act to become law through underhanded legislative tactics. Congress must reject this and any other measures that make it harder for eligible citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Protecting and expanding access to the ballot box should be the priority, not undermining it with unnecessary and discriminatory documentation requirements. Millions of Americans are counting on you to be a champion of voting rights and democracy itself. Do not give in to pressure from anti-voting activists. Stand firmly against the SAVE Act and any efforts to disenfranchise segments of the electorate through modern-day poll taxes and other suppressive measures with roots in America's discriminatory past. Uphold your sworn duty to protect the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution for all citizens. The future of our democracy depends on it.
