Urgent Call to Condemn Lawless Deportations and Defend the Constitution
First, thank you for your steadfast commitment to defending human rights and upholding the rule of law. I’m grateful to be represented by someone who speaks out in these turbulent times. But I write to you today with deepening concern and a heavy heart. What we are witnessing demands not only continued leadership—but intensified, urgent action. I am horrified by the unlawful deportations carried out by ICE, including the recent flight to El Salvador in direct defiance of a court order. The brutal treatment of detainees, the labeling of individuals as gang members without investigation or judicial process, and the mocking of our courts by Senators and members of the executive branch signal something deeply dangerous. When Senator Rubio mocks a court’s attempt to enforce due process, and Donald Trump singles out individuals like Mahmoud Khalil and Dr. Alawieh—using his platform to strip them of rights, demonize them publicly, and defy constitutional limits—we are no longer just dealing with policy disagreements. We are facing overt attempts to dismantle the foundations of democracy. If a sitting president can disappear people without due process, deport them in violation of court orders, and call for the impeachment of judges who rule against him, what is next? Will members of Congress be next? State governors? Journalists? Protesters? This isn’t about partisanship—it’s about protecting the Constitution. It’s about standing up for the humanity of those most vulnerable. If we do not speak out now for their rights, whose rights will we be able to defend later? I urge you to take bold, public action: • Condemn the extrajudicial deportations and the violent treatment of detainees. • Stand in firm support of the judiciary and the rule of law. • Call out the dangerous rhetoric and authoritarian actions coming from Donald Trump and his allies. • Demand accountability for those who defy court orders—including through impeachment proceedings where warranted. I believe in this country. I believe in its potential for justice. But that future is only possible if those with the power to defend our values have the courage to do so boldly and without delay. Thank you again for your leadership. Please keep going. We need your voice more than ever.
