The Library of Congress is a vital legislative-branch institution that provides critical nonpartisan research and support to Congress. The Trump regime's attempt to install unqualified political operative Todd Blanche as Acting Librarian of Congress is an outrageous violation of the independence of this institution. Blanche has zero relevant experience and his only qualification appears to be loyalty to Trump as his former personal lawyer. Congress must forcefully reject this brazen power grab by the executive branch and defend its constitutional prerogatives.
Acting Librarian Robert Newlen was correct to refuse to immediately recognize Trump's improper appointment. Newlen has dutifully served the Library for decades and has the full confidence of its expert professional staff. The independence of the Library and its ability to serve all members of Congress impartially is paramount. Allowing a partisan Trump loyalist to take over would grievously undermine this mission and potentially expose the confidential inquiries of members to improper political interference. The Library's critical role in supporting congressional oversight of the executive branch would also be severely compromised.
The law is clear that the President has no authority to appoint subordinate Library officials like Blanche tried to do. And there are serious constitutional questions around whether Trump can even remove the Senate- confirmed Librarian of Congress during her term. This appears to be an illegal overreach of executive power.
Congress must use all powers at its disposal to block Blanche's installation and preserve the Library's independence and integrity. Failing to do so would set a dangerous precedent allowing the executive branch to meddle in and undermine legislative branch agencies and operations.
Decisive action is required to rebuff this unconstitutional encroachment on Congress's constitutional role as a co-equal branch of government.
