Reject Laws That Legalize Violence Against Protester
I am writing to express deep concern regarding the Louisiana Freedom Caucus’s endorsement of legislation that grants civil immunity to drivers who strike protesters if they “reasonably believe” they are in danger. This law sets a dangerous and undemocratic precedent. While public safety is a legitimate concern, this policy fundamentally undermines First Amendment rights by creating a legal loophole to injure or kill protesters under the vague and subjective banner of “fear.” It enables violence against marginalized communities, silences dissent, and erodes accountability. Protesters have long been the heartbeat of American progress—from the civil rights movement to women’s suffrage to labor rights. We should not be in the business of legitimizing state-endorsed vigilante violence. I urge you to condemn this legislation and oppose any similar measures that threaten the right to protest and public safety.
