Voting rights are fundamental to a functioning democracy. The proposed legislation requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register for federal elections would erect unnecessary barriers for many eligible voters. Millions of Americans, including married women whose documents don't match their legal names, naturalized citizens, military members, tribal citizens, and working-class individuals may lack ready access to these documents. This would disproportionately disenfranchise marginalized communities. Existing laws already prevent non-citizens from voting in federal elections. This bill serves no legitimate purpose beyond voter suppression. I implore you to protect the sacred right to vote by rejecting this legislation. Our democracy depends on expanding, not restricting, access to the ballot box for all eligible citizens.
