Force Israel to release Dr. Hussam Abu Safia NOW!
I am writing to you as a deeply concerned constituent, compelled by the ongoing atrocities in Gaza and the role of U.S. funding in perpetuating these crimes. The systematic targeting of civilians, hospitals, and medical personnel by Israeli forces is appalling and demands urgent intervention. Recent reports, including from Democracy Now, highlight the gravity of the situation. Distinguished genocide scholar Omer Bartov has unequivocally stated that Israel is committing genocidal acts against the Palestinian people, emphasizing that the scale, intent, and destruction mirror the hallmarks of genocide. Bartov described the ongoing violence as “state-sponsored extermination,” which cannot be justified under any circumstances. These statements from one of the foremost experts on genocide underscore the critical need for immediate action. In this context, the abduction of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, and other healthcare workers is an egregious violation of international law. The deliberate destruction of Kamal Adwan Hospital, which burned doctors and patients alive, is an unthinkable atrocity. I urge you to demand the safe and immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all other healthcare workers detained by Israeli forces. Additionally, I implore you to take decisive action to halt Israel’s genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people and uphold the principle of medical neutrality. I call on you to ensure that Israel adheres to the following laws and agreements: 1. The First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Convention: Civilian medical personnel must be respected and protected, and assistance must be provided to medical services disrupted by conflict. 2. Article 16 of the Geneva Convention: No individual should be punished for performing medical duties aligned with medical ethics. 3. Article 10 of Protocol I, Additional to the Geneva Conventions: Medical personnel and their duties must be protected in all circumstances. 4. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC): Israel, as a signatory, must prioritize the well-being of children and guarantee their right to life and protection. 5. The Leahy Amendment (Leahy Law): The U.S. must cease support to foreign forces implicated in gross human rights violations. The brutal murder of Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh after being raped and tortured in Israeli detention underscores the inhumanity of these actions. These are not isolated incidents but part of a larger genocidal framework, as recognized by experts including the United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention. As Omer Bartov highlighted, this is a moral crisis for humanity. The world has seen the devastating consequences of failing to act against genocidal regimes. The United States, as a leading global power, bears both moral and legal obligations to prevent genocide under the Genocide Convention and U.S. federal law. Inaction in the face of such atrocities constitutes complicity. I urge you to: 1. Demand the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all detained healthcare workers. 2. Advocate for a cessation of U.S. military aid and arms transfers to Israel until these violations end. 3. Support an independent international investigation into Israel’s actions in Gaza. As your constituent, I call on you to stand on the side of justice, human dignity, and international law. The global community is watching, and history will judge the choices we make today.
