I am writing to demand that you oppose Senate Resolution 72 (S.Res. 72). This resolution is yet another example of the U.S. government attempting to dictate the political future of an occupied people while continuing to fund their oppressors. It is not the role of the United States to decide who governs Palestine. The Palestinian people have the right to self-determination, and any claim to support democracy while actively undermining it is pure hypocrisy.
Hamas, whether or not one approves of them, is a legitimate governing body in Gaza. They have repeatedly stated their willingness to put down arms if Palestinians are allowed to govern themselves freely and fairly. In April 2024, senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya reaffirmed that Hamas would disarm and transition into a political party if an independent Palestinian state were established on the pre-1967 borders, with the return of Palestinian refugees. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to bankroll Israel’s apartheid regime and genocide in Gaza, creating the exact conditions that lead to armed resistance. You cannot fund the oppression of an entire people and then express shock when they fight back. The reality is simple: if you want to end violence in the region, you must end the U.S.’s unconditional support for Israel’s occupation, apartheid, and war crimes.
Opposing this resolution is the bare minimum if you claim to care about democracy, human rights, or any semblance of justice. The choice is clear—either support Palestinian self-determination, or continue enabling genocide.
