How Many Genocide Scholars’ Assessments Does It Take for Congress to Act?

On July 15, 2025, The New York Times published a damning opinion piece by Dr. Omer Bartov, a Holocaust and genocide scholar at Brown University. In it, Dr. Bartov—who was born and raised in Israel, served in the IDF, and has spent his career studying war crimes—concludes, unequivocally, that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. Let that sink in: a lifelong scholar of genocide, a former Israeli soldier, says he has resisted this conclusion “as long as [he] could,” but that after nearly two years of mass death and destruction, it is now “inescapable.” According to him, the Israeli government’s actions—forced displacement, systematic destruction of infrastructure, starvation, and relentless bombing—are unmistakably genocidal, both in intent and in effect. He is not alone. Internationally respected experts like Melanie O’Brien, William Schabas, Martin Shaw, Shmuel Lederman, and many others have reached the same conclusion. The International Court of Justice is hearing a genocide case against Israel. The evidence is overwhelming. So I ask you: How many genocide scholars does it take for you to consider the truth? Is it that you haven’t heard enough, or that you simply refuse to listen? The numbers are staggering: over 58,000 Palestinians killed, including more than 17,000 children. Nearly 2,000 entire families wiped from existence. More than 70% of Gaza’s buildings—homes, schools, mosques, hospitals—destroyed. Children are starving. Gaza is being made uninhabitable by design. Gaza now has the highest number of amputee children per capita in the world. This is not “self-defense.” This is a war against an entire population. It is a textbook case of genocide. And the United States continues to bankroll it, shield it diplomatically, and send more weapons. You are not just standing by. You are helping it happen. Dr. Bartov warns that denying this genocide threatens the very foundation of international law created after the Holocaust—law the U.S. helped shape and is legally obligated to uphold. He warns that invoking the Holocaust to excuse genocide is a moral collapse of historic proportions. And yet most of Congress remains silent—or worse, complicit. So I ask again: Is this enough for you? If not now, when? When Gaza is completely leveled? When every child is dead? Or will you never acknowledge it—because to do so would mean admitting the blood is also on your hands? I demand the following: 1. End all military aid and arms transfers to Israel. 2. Cooperate fully with the ICJ genocide investigations. 3. Hold public hearings featuring genocide experts, including Dr. Bartov. 4. Impose sanctions on Israeli leaders complicit in crimes against humanity. 5. Demand and ensure immediate, unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. 6. Support the creation of a Palestinian state based on terms determined by Palestinians—not the U.S. or Israel. Your constituents will not forget where you stood.
