Preserve the Boundary Waters. NO HR978 & poison pills. YES HR588H & Tina Smith
Please support Senator Tina Smith's legislation to preserve the Boundary Waters. In addition, I ask you to vote NO on HR 978. This bill would have catastrophic effects on one of the most precious areas of America's wilderness, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. HR 978 doesn't just undo the 20 year ban on mining in the BWCA watershed and give Twin Metals their leases to undertake toxic copper mining. It also prohibits judicial review: a poison pill. Please vote YES for H.R. 588 (IH) - Boundary Waters Wilderness Protectionand Pollution Prevention Act. HR 588 act will provide for the protection of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and interconnected Federal lands and waters, including Voyageurs National Park, within the Rainy River Watershed in the State of Minnesota. Please strip out from the budget Bill any poison pill additions that would open the Boundary Waters areas to mining or other destructive exploitation. Our unspoiled wilderness is a majestic and sacred heritage. Nearly half of Minnesota's native fish species live in the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs National Park, including the lake sturgeon and northern brook lamprey, two of the state's species of special interest. The BWCA is a beloved national treasure. I ask you to use all mechanisms to protect it and ensure that damaging legislation is not passed, not separately, not as part of a budget.
