Equally disturbing is the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) defense of Musk’s actions. The ADL’s alleged core mission of combating antisemitism and hate has long obfuscated its true purpose: supporting Israel’s systematic oppression of Palestinians and the theft of their lands and lives. By urging “benefit of the doubt” for Musk’s antisemitic gestures, while condemning Palestinian kufiyahs as symbols of hate, the ADL reveals its hypocrisy and alignment with oppressive systems that perpetuate violence and inequality.
It is critical that we hold Musk and institutions like the ADL accountable. The ADL’s complicity in shielding individuals like Musk from scrutiny while targeting advocates for Palestinian rights is a betrayal of Jewish values of justice and collective liberation. Organizations like IfNotNow, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Bend the Arc have bravely resisted the ADL’s complicity, and I urge you to stand with these groups in rejecting its harmful rhetoric.
The media’s role in erasing Musk’s actions compounds this crisis. NBC’s decision to edit out Musk’s Nazi salutes sanitizes hate and denies public accountability. Such censorship protects perpetrators of harm and emboldens those advancing an authoritarian, white nationalist agenda.
I call on you to take a strong, public stand by:
1. Demanding accountability from Elon Musk for his actions and scrutinizing his platform’s role in amplifying hate speech.
2. Questioning the ADL’s legitimacy as a voice against antisemitism, given its consistent efforts to undermine Palestinian solidarity.
