Does Israel’s Murder of Reem and Khaled Nabhan Uphold Your Values?
I’m writing to you to ask you to consider these questions: How many more Palestinian lives must be deliberately destroyed before you take a stand for humanity, justice, and domestic and international law? And how many more families must suffer incomprehensible loss under your watch? Reem Nabhan, a young girl full of life and potential, and her grandfather, Khaled Nabhan, were killed in Israeli airstrikes, one year apart, in Gaza—2 more heinous acts enabled and supported by the political cover, military aid, and silence you provide to Israel. Their deaths are not isolated; they are part of a deliberate, systematic genocide against Palestinians. When you vote to arm Israel, when you shield it from accountability, you are complicit in every child buried under rubble, every family torn apart, and every life stolen. Reem and Khaled’s story is not unique, but it is tragic nonetheless. A grandfather’s love for his granddaughter, the innocence of a child—obliterated in moments by an apartheid regime emboldened by your unconditional support. He referred to his 3-year-old granddaughter as “the soul of my soul.” What does it say about your values that you continue to fund a government committing crimes against humanity? What does it say about what you stand for when you fail to demand an end to these atrocities? This bloodshed will continue unless you act. It is not enough to express “concern” while voting for weapons transfers. You must take action to secure: • An immediate arms embargo on Israel. • Severe economic sanctions until Israel proves compliance with international law. • Full refunding of UNRWA. • Repeal of all anti-BDS legislation • End to Israel’s illegal occupation and annexation of Gaza, East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights • Recognition of Palestinian statehood by the United States • Compliance with all ICC, ICJ, UN Security Council, and UN General Assembly decisions. The burden of proof lies with Israel. They must show the world that they are no longer committing war crimes, no longer targeting civilians, no longer starving an entire population. Until that day, every dollar, every weapon, every moment of your complicity makes you culpable for this genocide. Reem and Khaled Nabhan deserved life, not death under your watch. It is time you choose: Will you stand for justice and humanity, or will you remain complicit in their slaughter? I believe you have the capacity to alter your path and exhibit the humanity that we all have within each of us. Remember, history is watching. And so are we.
