I am writing to urge you to vote NO on H.R. 22, the so-called “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” (SAVE) Act. This bill is one of the most dangerous voter suppression efforts in modern history, and it must be rejected.
H.R. 22 would require all Americans to show either a passport or a birth certificate to register to vote — excluding student IDs, driver’s licenses, military IDs, and other common forms of identification that Americans rely on every day. This bill would disenfranchise tens of millions of eligible voters.
Consider the facts:
• Nearly 150 million Americans do not have a passport.
• 69 million women have a birth certificate that doesn’t match their current legal name due to marriage or other changes.
• Many Americans — especially the elderly, low-income individuals, and those born in rural areas — face serious hurdles in accessing or obtaining their birth certificates.
• In seven states, fewer than one-third of citizens even have a valid passport.
This bill is not about safeguarding our elections. It’s about creating unnecessary and discriminatory barriers to participation, disproportionately targeting women, the elderly, young people, low-income Americans, and communities of color.
Voting is a fundamental right. H.R. 22 is a direct assault on that right and an attack on the very foundation of our democracy. I urge you to stand up for fair and accessible elections and vote NO on the SAVE Act.
