That’s 1.4 million Floridians who should check their registration status

Amid accusations across the country of gerrymandering, voter-roll purges, and countless other obstacles to poll access, Florida is making history by restoring the right to vote to 1,400,000 convicted felons and undoing legislation that has been on the books since the 19th century.

Spearheaded by the ACLU, canvassers across the Sunshine State spent months beating the grass asking for signatures to have the Voting Rights Restoration Initiative included on the November ballot. That effort paid off in a big way. Approved by more than 60% of voters, Florida’s constitution will be amended to say that certain convicted felons, who have completed all terms of their sentences, including probation, will once again be eligible to vote in elections ranging from their local school board to presidential races.
