Michigan gives us hope

I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s been a rough week in the news. But there is hope from the frozen north where the temperature got down to…. 36 degrees last night.

Seriously — it’s warmer on the upper peninsula of Michigan than it is in Washington DC today.

But perhaps the Great Lakes State is warmed by the soft glow of election reform. On election day, Michiganders will vote on Proposal 3, which is unquestionably the most ambitious election reform proposal on any national ballot this year.

Proposal 3 would turn Michigan from one of the most voter-hostile states in the country into one of the friendliest. If it passes, Michiganders will be able to vote early, register to vote on election day, automatically register when applying for a state ID, and request an absentee ballot without needing to justify themselves to the state.

Given the lengths to which Republicans have gone to suppress votes in Arizona, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina, Georgia, and of African Americans demographically it is a relief to see measures like Proposal 3 polling above 70% with likely voters in Michigan.

There is still hope.
