Ballot Measures: North Dakota
Early voting in North Dakota runs October 22 through November 5
North Dakota has four ballot measures up for consideration, two of which have the potential to impact future elections in North Dakota.
Measure 1
If passed, Measure 1 would amend the North Dakota Constitution to establish an ethics commission, prohibit foreign contributions to political campaigns, and open campaign finance information to the public.
Impact: Unclear — Measure 1 is about a philosophical disagreement about free speech and the place of money in politics. Its impact on politics depends on who wields the powers it gives to the government.
Support: Mixed — Measure 1 has the ACLU siding with petroleum companies against End Citizens United and Represent.us.
Measure 2
If passed, Measure 2 would amend the North Dakota Constitution to prohibit non-citizens from voting in federal, state and local elections in North Dakota… which they already can’t.
Impact: None — This is already against the law in North Dakota. It’s political grandstanding
Support: A Special Interest Group called “North Dakotans for Citizen Voting.” No one else cares.
